The Kindle has various screen savers of which this is one. It uses almost no battery power when you are looking at a page or in screen saver mode. The energy is used to create the image, not maintain it. If you turn off the Internet connection (separate switch) the battery will last through a week or more of reading. Online mode uses the battery rapidly. Recharge is 2 hours or less.
I have already read one book on this and am now reading a second. Both were downloaded free from my local library web site...mobipocket loan editions (had to do a little special file processing to make them work.)
Note: If you wrap the elastic band around the lower right corner the Kindle will be much less likely to fall out of its book cover.

This is one little invention I really like. I am a reader. I read all sorts of stuff all the time. This electronic book produced by Amazon.com is exactly what I wanted. The text is actually made from e-ink (real ink attracted to charged areas on the screen). There is no backlight. It is easy to read, just like a real book. I can fit hundreds of books (electronic ones) inside the Kindle. It can also access the Internet through a wireless telephone connection that Amazon calls Whispernet. If you can get bars on your telephone you can reach the Internet...no charge either. It's included. I even check on Flickr with this or send e-mail.
