Oakham Firemen seek support with a petition for support Oakham's local fire station. There is a proposal from Leicestershire Fire and rescue Service wich may lead to a change to the fire cover presently provided in Rutland. This proposal is currently under public consultation. This change could involve the removal of the 24 hour, immediate response capability curently provided at Oakhm Fire Station. Presently there is 1 fire engine, crewed 24 hours a day by fulltime firefighters, and 1 fire engine and a heavy rescue unit crewed by retained firefighters. This means that 1 fire engine will be on the road to any emergency in approx 2 minutes. The 2nd fire engine crewed by retained will be on the road in about 7 minutes. The proposals could mean the removal of the fulltime crew, either permanently or at night, increasing the response times for a fire engine by about 5 minutes, The firemen say these 5 minutes are crucial if I require assistance. These 5 minutes could mean the difference between my life or death if I was trapped in a fire or a road traffic accident. The proposal will mean the removal of emergency resources from Rutland to be deployed elsewhere in Leicestershire.. By signing the petition I was letting my elected representatives in Rutland know that I was not happy for this to happen and expect them to oppose the propsals on my behalf.
